I'm Jonny Woolley, a Canadian designer, director and producer based in London, UK. I work mostly in comedy, designing posters, writing, devising and directing live shows, and producing for film and television.
My background is in theatre. I studied in Toronto and later with Philippe Gaulier in France, before beginning to create and direct shows at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2015. I went on to co-found Stamptown, and have spent the past decade building the company alongside my creative partner Zach Zucker. What began at the Fringe has grown into international tours, Off-Broadway productions and a Netflix special.
My graphic design work includes posters, logos, visual identities and merchandise for comedians and performers around the world. Having spent over a decade making shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, I know what it takes to stand out amongst thousands of posters. I work closely with artists to develop ideas, identify what makes their work unique and translate that into something visually compelling. I've received four nominations for the Edinburgh Comedy Poster Awards, winning twice.
My approach to directing is rooted in clown, with an emphasis on developing material through live performance rather than exclusively in rehearsal. I've devised and directed shows including Jack Tucker: Comedy Standup Hour, a New York Times Critic's Pick, as well as shows with Josh Glanc, Viggo Venn and Adam Flood.
With Stamptown, I pioneered a widely influential improvisational style of soundboard performance, using sound and music to interact with performers and shape the action in real time. Besides Zach Zucker and Viggo Venn, I've worked with boundary-pushing artists including Julia Masli, Garry Starr and Natalie Palamides. Depending on the performer, the soundboard can be a means of directing a show as it unfolds, or be a performance in its own right – often a bit of both.
At the end of the day, I like helping artists figure out what's distinctive about their work, then finding the best way to put it in front of an audience.
“[Jonny Woolley’s] tangled web of masterfully timed sound effects has unintentionally become the heartbeat of ‘Stamptown’.”

The Netflix special brings Stamptown's anarchic collision of comedy, clowning and circus to the screen, with outrageous acts, explicit material and clothing very much optional. Filmed at the Montalbán Theatre in Los Angeles during Netflix Is a Joke Fest, it features performers including Neil Patrick Harris.

The filmed adaptation of our New York Times Critic's Pick stage show, recorded at The Bell House in Brooklyn and directed for screen by Dylan Woodley. It grew out of the original live production, which I directed and co-devised.
Damien Warren-Smith's smash-hit, award-winning literary clown show, in which Garry Starr attempts to perform every Penguin Classic ever written in one hour, mostly naked. My involvement spans its West End engagements at the Arts Theatre in 2025 and Garrick Theatre in 2026.

Natalie Palamides plays both halves of a troubled couple in this award-winning, one-person romantic comedy set on New Year's Eve 1999. I was part of the inaugural production at the newly restored Soho Theatre Walthamstow in May 2025, returning with the show in January 2026.

Julia Masli attempts to solve audience members' problems in this Edinburgh Comedy Award-nominated, largely improvised clown show. My involvement spans both Soho Theatre runs, the Off-Broadway engagement at Soho Playhouse and the 2026 UK tour. The New York Times praised our sound work for creating an “eerie mood” that could “turn discordant unexpectedly”, culminating in a “fantastic coup de remix”.

Adam Flood's acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe debut, combining sharp stand-up, musical comedy and stories of growing up in Stoke-on-Trent. I played a central role in developing the live show alongside Adam, helping to restructure and refine the script, shape its overall dramatic progression, and devise the theatrical, musical and technical elements that brought the production to life. Named one of the three rising stars of the 2023 Fringe by The Times, Adam subsequently toured the show across the UK, including a run at Soho Theatre. The production was filmed and released as Clayhead in 2024.
Julia Masli's award-winning debut solo show, following an Eastern European clown on a journey to America in search of a hot dog. I designed the sound for the production, sourcing and editing music, creating sound effects and soundscapes, and devising cue sequences that interacted directly with Julia's performance. One of the best-reviewed shows of the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe, it received the Telegraph's Alternative Comedy Award for Best Sad Clown.

An absurd musical comedy extravaganza combining clown, sketch comedy, original songs, bizarre characters and unpredictable audience interaction. I co-directed the live production alongside John-Luke Roberts. Following its Edinburgh Fringe run, the show won a weekly Critics' Choice Award at Fringe World and was adapted into a filmed special released by 800 Pound Gorilla Media in 2024.
A wildly self-indulgent solo clown show about Zach Zucker's increasingly desperate pursuit of Hollywood stardom, featuring a live score by Lucas Tamaren of Thumpasaurus. I co-wrote the show, working closely with Zach to develop and refine its comedy. First developed at the Monkey Barrel during the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe, the production subsequently transferred to Soho Theatre in London.

Zach Zucker's spectacularly incompetent stand-up alter-ego desperately tries to salvage his career as his act (and life) collapses around him. I co-wrote substantial portions, shaped its dramatic arc, and pioneered the improvisational approach to live sound at its heart. Music and effects interrupt, provoke and redirect Zach in real time, turning the soundboard into an active comic counterpart. Developed at the Lyric Hyperion in Los Angeles, Adelaide Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festival before its breakthrough Edinburgh Fringe run in 2019, the show became a cult classic, touring four continents and enjoying an Off-Broadway run extended multiple times. A New York Times Critic's Pick in 2024.

A short-lived but well-loved late-night comedy panel show at Underbelly Cowgate during the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe, bringing together (way too many) guest comedians for games, stand-up, live sound effects, beatboxing and wild stunts. Blurring the line between a traditional panel show and an anarchic variety performance, the loose format encouraged improvisation, unexpected detours and increasingly ridiculous situations.

A surreal and unexpectedly personal solo show exploring Josh Glanc's complicated relationship with his mother, combining Vegas-style crooning, absurd sketches, physical comedy, audience plants, and autobiographical storytelling. I worked closely with Josh to curate and refine the material, balance its wildly contrasting comedic and personal elements, and shape the show's overarching dramatic arc. The production played the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Edinburgh Fringe in 2019.

An absurdist sci-fi funk opera set in the aftermath of a space war between Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. Based on a concept by Lucas Tamaren, Thumpasaurus invited Zach Zucker, Dylan Woodley, Viggo Venn and me to develop the book for their original musical work, shaping its story, characters and comedy. Directed by Ben Benjamin (Beyoncé, HBO Max, Underscores), the production featured Thumpasaurus performing live alongside Ben's projections, with me playing Jeff Bezos. Winner of a ThreeWeeks Editors' Award at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe, the show later returned for a one-off performance in Los Angeles and a livestreamed read-through in 2020.

The award-winning, anarchic live variety show I co-created with Zach Zucker, bringing together some of the world's most exciting alternative comedians, clowns, musicians and circus performers. Stamptown has sold out consecutive Edinburgh Fringe runs and played Off-Broadway, Lincoln Center, Glastonbury, SXSW, Just For Laughs and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Chortle called it “the best late-night show on the festival circuit”; One4Review declared it “the greatest variety show in the world”. Alongside executive producing and creative direction, I perform improvisationally from the soundboard, provoking performers, redirecting scenes and shaping the action in real time. The show's success led to a Netflix special in 2026.

The debut solo show of Britain's Got Talent winner Viggo Venn. Developed closely with Viggo, the production combined a loose narrative with surreal physical clowning, improvisation, playful audience interaction and inventive live sound play. The show originated his now-famous “My Name Is” routine, later performed on the BGT semi-finals. Debuting at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe, it subsequently earned Best Comedy nominations at Brighton Fringe and Perth Fringe World.

Zach Zucker's wildly divisive debut solo clown show, combining outrageous physical comedy, absurd characters, improvisation and confrontational audience interaction. The improvised interplay between Zach onstage and me behind the soundboard helped establish the performance style we'd later employ in Jack Tucker and Stamptown. The 2017 Edinburgh Fringe run produced nine standing ovations, 13 walkouts and two police complaints, and featured a notoriously obscene musical finale best left undescribed.

The breakout debut of Zach Zucker and Viggo Venn, and the show that launched all three of our careers. Developed together after meeting at École Philippe Gaulier, Thunderflop combined anarchic physical comedy, surreal sketches, fearless audience interaction and freewheeling improvisation. From modest beginnings in 2015, it became a sold-out Edinburgh Fringe sensation, winning Best Comedy awards at Brighton and Adelaide Fringe and touring extensively across four continents. Hailed by The Guardian as the arrival of a new generation of Gaulier-trained clowns, the show helped define a new wave of alternative clown comedy, establishing a distinctive creative style that would influence countless performers and lay the foundations for much of our subsequent work.
